Weight Management

Following ‘crash’ diets often doesn’t work – whilst you may lose weight, they are often too restrictive and people struggle to stick to them for long.
The best way to lose weight is to make small adjustments to your current diet and understand why you are eating.
Loosing weight can reduce your risk of certain conditions such as heart disease and type 2 cholesterol. It can also help reduce total blood pressure, cholesterol and pain.

Here at BVM we have our own Dietitian who is available to support patients with diet and nutritional issues.
If you have tried some of the above and would like further support from our practice Dietitian and have a BMI >30kg/m2, please submit a Klinik request if you are interested in this service.

Semaglutide (Wegovy®)

Semaglutide (Wegovy®) for managing overweight and obesity - updated advice 6th September 2023

Unfortunately, Wegovy is not available to patients unless they are already under the care of a specialist weight management service. Please therefore do not make requests for this medication at this time as we will not be able to prescribe it.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published the technology appraisal TA875 Semaglutide for managing overweight and obesity on 8th March 2023 and recommend semaglutide as an option for weight management, including weight loss and weight maintenance alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increase physical activity in adults, providing that certain specific criteria are met.  However, this treatment must be initiated by a specialist and is not suitable for prescribing by GP Practices. The locally commissioned specialist weight management service is also currently closed to new referrals, so we are not able to refer patients to be considered for this treatment.

We will update this page when we have more information, but until then, unfortunately this treatment is not currently available unless you are already under the care of the hospital specialist weight management service.
